PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Perched above the Pacific Ocean this project transforms an asphalt parking lot into a neighborhood park for the residents of the South San Pedro neighborhood.  This project successfully addresses site issues associated with shoreline stability and geotechnical requirements. Working closely with the project geotechnical and civil engineers, a unique design solution was developed to prevents infiltration by capping the site while still allowing for planting areas, parking, and community gathering spaces. The wooden viewing platforms and cor-ten steel planters that rest on top of the concrete pads provide a wide range of seating and gathering spaces oriented to the expansive views of the ocean. No trees could be planted and brilliantly colored sedum roof plantings that require no irrigation were used instead, avoiding infiltration to site soils. The decks and walls provide a multitude of opportunities for visitors to have unobstructed and elevated views of the ocean.
