This project is part of the Let’sPlaySF initiative funded by the 2012 Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond, which identified the 13 most under served playgrounds in San Francisco and provides funding for their renovation. Groundworks Office was chosen by the San Francisco Parks Alliance to lead the design efforts for the $2M makeover of Alice Chalmers Playground. The $2 million dollar project is currently in a 6 month conceptual design and public out reach phase which includes meetings with city staff, stakeholders and community members to understand how the playground is currently used and to hear what the people want the new playground to be.
The redesign of Alice Chalmers Playground brings a fresh look and feel to what is currently a worn down, and worn out playground. The design combines traditional play elements with a thoughtful layout of custom elements that deliver a large play impact in a small space. The design also pays particular attention to providing free, or creative, play opportunities which allow children to utilize their imagination while engaging the playground. This approach also allows spaces to function in multiple ways at different times, maximizing the play potential of the space.
