Can a tired old gas station structure a cool place to hang out, grill a burger and drink a beer?

At nearly 500 acres, the Hewlett Packard campus in Roseville, California is a sprawling mix of beige one-story buildings, asphalt parking lots and verdant irrigated lawns. Generally, a placeless landscape void of anything visually interesting is a corporate landscape relic of the 1980s, when a 200-foot-long allée of trees was “cool” or made for a great space.

We were commissioned to scrape off the vestiges of the corporate campus and envision a new future, one that is ecological, sustainable and built for people. Step one for us was repurposing an abandoned car wash structure within a sea of parking. Our client saw a structure to be demolished, we saw gold! So, we transformed the structure into an outdoor kitchen and eatery, complete with stadium stairs and a 25-foot-long picnic table. It is now a fun spot to have lunch or an after-work beer.

Lastly, we animated the campus with a variety of colorful and moveable seats and made places for people that are functional, warm and inviting.
