Levi Plaza

Tread lightly; this is hallowed ground for landscape architects. Lawrence Halprin was once here!

Program Elements

Details

Knolls, plazas, boulders and a babbling brook all mark this verdant open space alongside San Francisco’s iconic Embarcadero. Home to Levi Strauss & Co. for the past 40 years, this historic landscape has been preserved with an exacting attention to detail. The design language references the rough and natural landscape of the Sierra Foothills, the birthplace of Levi’s signature denim pants.

GWO was commissioned to envision how Levi Plaza could reference and enhance its rich past as it looks ahead to the next 40 years. Building on the design foundation established by Halprin, the plan emphasizes the California landscape while increasing connectivity to the waterfront, expanding programming and attracting a broader spectrum of users.
