Windriver

Resonating with the history of both the built and natural environments, the Wind River overlooks offer visitors a picturesque and poignant moment of respite along the Alameda shore.

Details

Overlooking the Oakland Estuary there’s an inconspicuous site that is integral to our global economy. Wind River is the birthplace of the modern shipping container and intermodal freight transportation system, and is still a strategic connection for delivering products across the world. When Groundworks Office was asked to design a series of waterfront overlooks, we couldn't resist tapping into the site's rich industrial history — as well as the long-term environmental impact of that industry.

Designed and aligned to maximize the expansive views toward Downtown Oakland and the East Bay, the overlooks educate visitors on the evolution of this unique environment. Lined with hardy, resilient plants, it frames views of hulking concrete ruins dotting the water’s edge — the vestigial remains of a massive gantry structure used from the 1920's to 1940's to transfers railcars onto barges. It was one of the first such device and the precursor to the way we ship cargo around the world today.

The wood platforms trace the rugged contours of the coastline; their design will make any changes to the shape of that coastline evident to future generations. Benches made form old rail ties make the site’s history explicit and offer a place to rest and enjoy the scenic vistas while considering the impending effects that sea level rise will have on this complex waterfront location.
